Relationship with the Lamas
I wanted to say that my Lamas become more remarkable every
day I spend with them as their student, but I’ve come to suspect
that perception is incorrect. I think actually I realise more and more
who they have always been. I take great delight in symbol and
ceremony, but have come to realise that having one’s glass
refilled with a smile and slight nod of the head come New Year’s
Eve is infinitely more remarkable than any tsog feast, empowerment or
ritual. To be offered hospitality in one’s teachers’ home,
to be able to express a deep fascination for Tolkien, or a loathing
for didjeridos, and to have one’s passion fuelled and magnified
is a great joy.
